Set up before the baby arrives at the scene
Have the cake, backdrop, and camera fully ready in advance — a baby's patience for waiting around a set is measured in seconds, not minutes.
Get the 'before' shot first
Photograph the baby clean, in the outfit, next to the intact cake before any smashing starts — this is often the shot parents want most, and it's the easiest one to miss once the mess begins.
Shoot continuously, not occasionally
Burst mode or continuous shooting captures the fast, unpredictable expressions of a baby discovering cake far better than trying to time individual shots.
What's a good backup plan if the baby won't touch the cake?
